The Islamic Fundamentalist View of Life As A Perennial Battle

February 28th, 2006 at 10:14am (Islam, Western Civ)

When confronting Islam, we in the west must remember that we are not in a battle over race or ethnicity. Nor are we engaged in a war about Americans vs. Arabs, or white skin vs. brown. If the lines were drawn here we would not be fighting a legitimate battle. Instead we would be racists. If any confrontation with Islam deteriorates to that level, then the battle is already lost. Rather, the battle with Islam is a battle of ideas – a clash of worldviews. It must be an intellectual assault that will eventually win the day.

Unfortunately, it would appear that western media has failed to understand this. Feeling that any critique of Islam is based upon race, newspapers and TV stations have veered away from anything but a glowing opinion about Islam. This ignorance is to the detriment of the west. By failing to recognise that Islam is a world-and-life view based upon a violent ideology and history, we are clearing the path for a complete take-over.

Sounds melodramatic? Even a cursory glance at statistics should hopefully shock readers with a dose of realism. If the most popular name in the Netherlands is Mohammad, what I have said thus far shouldn’t seem overblown. The fact that the Ontario government nearly allowed Sharia law into the province should also prove to be convincing evidence.

How do we curtail the Islamic seige of the west? One of the first things that all westerners need to do is wake up and shake the sleep from their eyes. We need to know what Islam is and what fuels its burning fire for violence and conquest. One way to do that is to study the Islamic texts themselves such as the Quran and the Hadith. That’s why I always take a copy of whatever book the Muslim ‘evangelists’ are offering in front of the Eaton Centre – I want to familiarise myself with their teaching so that I will fairly and accurately be able to challenge it. As well, it is important to read the works of various scholars who have given good theological, philosophical and historical critiques of Islam.

An excellent place to start online is with the Middle East Review of International Affairs. I just read an article by Islam expert David Zeidan entitled The Islamic Fundamentalist View of Life As A Perennial Battle (MEIRA Vol. 5, No. 4, Dec. 2001). I now feel like I have a proper understanding of why Muslims are so bent on converting the whole world to their ideology. The issue of Islamic take-over is more complex than we might think. It is based not merely upon a desire to see Allah reign supreme over the world, there are drastic socio-economic factors involved as well as psychological. This article could well be one of the best I have ever read on Islam and I would highly recommend it to any who read The Lord Protector.

David Zeidan is a good source for Islamic study. He is a research consultant for MEIRA and has written numerous articles for their journal. He has authored a number of books on Islam including Sword of Allah: Islamic Fundamentalism from an Evangelical Perspective (Send the Light, 2003), The Resurgence of Religion: A Comparative Study of Selected Themes in Christian and Islamic Fundamentalists (Brill, 2002) and The Fifth Pillar (Piquant, 2000). He completed an MA at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, where he also did his PhD in comparative religions (the publication by Brill noted above).
